Longtown is situated about 7 miles northeast of Carlisle and 3 miles east of Gretna Green. If travelling from the south, leave the M6 at Junction 44 and take the third exit on the roundabout, A7 to Longtown. If travelling from the north leave the M74 at the Gretna turnoff and follow the signs for Longtown.
Longtown sits prettily on the River Esk, nature’s border with Scotland and one of the key reasons that Longtown has seen many centuries of border warfare. One of the local legends is that King Arthur raised an army of Northern Britons to meet the pagan hoards from the North Sea. It is said that King Arthur's last battle could have been at the Hadrian's Wall fort of Camtoglama and that his body rested at the Parish of Arthuret.
Here at the Home From Home, you can easily visit both the Lake District and Scotland via excellent roadways and public transport. Scotland is only four miles away and offers the fun of the Gretna Gateway Outlet Village, or even drive to the wonderful city of Edinburgh. The North Lakes and Windermere are all a short distance away too and are amongst the most picturesque places to visit in Britain.
